Welcome all who visit my website.  I am Marla Sunstrom a basket weaver of nineteen years.  My first basket class was in 1991 when a couple of my closest friends dragged me to a six week basketry class at the local technical college.  Needless to say as many of us do, I was hooked.  I have since worked on expanding and sharing my knowledge of basketry with others.

Baskets By Marla was started in 1995 when it was apparent that basketry would be part of my life for years to come. Over the past eighteen years I have explored many different styles and materials.  I don't think we ever stop learning new things along the way so by sharing an idea here or technique there I feel we all can grow and learn together.

One of my fondest areas of exploration has been with colors.  I have spent a great deal of time trying to achive the colors that are less traditional.  I have experimented with dyeing basket reed, but my current exploration is with cane, seagrass and the dyes themselves.  I also enjoy incorporating other materials into my basketry such as yarns, fibers, copper, beads and natural materials.
